Measure Impact
All actions help or hurt our progress. Knowing how much is essential.
Numbers can be hard to internalize.
One million metric tons of emissions seems like a lot. Is it?
When our destination is zero, all emissions matter.
But context is critical so we can focus where it matters most.
Here’s a picture of Minnesota’s emissions:
In 2020, Minnesota's entire economy --
from homes to farms, businesses to buildings --
emitted 137 million metric tons of greenhouse gases.
Double that and you get what the Line 3 tar sands pipeline, permitted in 2020, adds to the atmosphere each year: 273 million metric of greenhouse gas emissions. (This total incorporates the 193 million metric tons from the expanded capacity of the new larger Line 3 pipeline.)
This graph compares the emissions either added or saved by specific actions, as compared to the state's 2018 emissions.
